More Information: Author of, "The Company We Keep: Reinventing Small Business for People, Community, and Place," John Abrams is cofounder and CEO South Mountain Co., a 30-year-old, employee-owned design and building company on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts . He chairs the Island Affordable Housing Fund and is vice-chair of the Island Housing Trust, two nonprofits dedicated to solving the community's affordable housing crisis. For many years, he has spoken and written about socially responsible business, affordable housing, and ecological building issues. At the 2005 Business for Social Responsibility conference, Business Ethics magazine presented Mr. Abrams and South Mountain Company with its annual Business Ethics Award for Workplace Democracy. In this talk, Mr. Abrams will examine the potential for small businesses - especially employee-owned businesses with strong local connections - to use their bottom line success to build healthy communities and a restorative future. assess the financial viability of a program? How can the value
of staff time dedicated to fundraising or to lobbying be calculated
for IRS reporting? How much office supplies expense should
be charged to a particular grant? Is it possible for a
small nonprofit without sophisticated accounting software to
have an adequate cost allocation system? Every organization
needs a cost allocation system to facilitate grant reporting,
Form 990 and financial statements preparation, and decision-making
about program cost-effectiveness. This session will apply the
principles of cost allocation to nonprofits, and illustrate
how an effective system can be developed using only Excel and
a simple accounting package such as Quickbooks. Mig Murphy
Sistrom, CPA, is a financial consultant exclusively to nonprofit
organizations. She provides accounting, tax, training,
and planning services. She has been active in the nonprofit
sector for over 10 years as an advisor, finance director, outside
auditor, teacher, volunteer, and board member. (Individuals

that has been addressing social risks and conflicts for nearly
25 years, designing and implementing projects that identify

programs have provided skills in mediation and conflict transformation,
and have empowered civic, religious, and political leaders in
Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the US to work together to

Peace Prize by members of the South African parliament, with
endorsement by leaders in China and Indonesia and members of

More Information: Prior to Katrina, thousands
of people evacuated the Gulf Coast with only the clothes on
their backs. Now, they have nothing to return home to. To help
those directly impacted by Hurricane Katrina, The Social Impact
club is spearheading a trip to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi
for the first part of Fall Break. We will work with both The
Red Cross (shelters, debris removal, etc) and Habitat for Humanity
(building houses) to provide aide to hurricane victims.
Cost will be kept minimal, but may include transportation (we
are driving), lodging, and food.
Partners and friends are encouraged to join us. If interested,

More Information: Mr. Tierney is a recognized leader in the nonprofit sector. In 1999 he launched The Bridgespan Group, an independent, nonprofit affiliate of Bain & Company designed to provide general management consulting services to foundations and nonprofit organizations. During 2000, Mr. Tierney stepped down as Bain & Company's chief executive to concentrate on Bridgespan related activities. Recently, he led the development of Bridgestar, a new nonprofit initiative dedicated to enhancing leadership within the nonprofit sector. Mr. Tierney serves on the boards of eBay, Inc., The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, The Hoover Institution, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Harvard Business School, The Harvard Business School Initiative on Social Enterprise and The National Academies. Mr. Tierney lectures at Harvard Business School and has contributed to numerous case studies and publications, including The Harvard Business Review.
