ATTENTION STUDENTS: Day in Durham, August 26th!

Tom Niemann, '91

Come join us for Fuqua's annual orientation to the Durham community on Saturday, August 26th, 12:00-4:00pm! Enjoy time with your fellow students while learning how to use your business skills to achieve social impact. RSVP by noon on Friday, August 18th (see details below).

The event kicks off at noon in Geneen Auditorium with a box lunch and keynote speaker and Fuqua '91 alumnus Tom Niemann, Managing Partner of Blue Devil Ventures, LLC, a Durham-based community development company specializing in the adaptive reuse of historic urban properties. The mission of Blue Devil Ventures (BDV) is to use the renovation of abandoned historic properties in downtown communities as a catalyst for urban revitalization and economic development on a larger scale. By creating attractive mixed-use communities in the heart of the city, BDV hopes to re-introduce people to downtown, and promote a healthy and thriving urban environment.

Please show up a little early to pick up your box lunch and get a good seat (11:30-11:45am).

Following the keynote speech, students will board buses and head out into Durham neighborhoods on three separate itineraries, each of which will include presentations from community and business leaders. This year's itineraries include:

Itinerary A - Social Enterprise (TROSA)

CASE Awards Social Sector Scholarship

The Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE) has awarded a $25,000 scholarship to Suzanne Steffens, a member of the Duke MBA Class of 2008 at the Fuqua School of Business. The CASE Social Sector Scholarship, the first of its kind among top business schools, recognizes students for their commitment to pursuing a career in the social sector. This program is sponsored by a generous grant from the Wachovia Foundation.

CASE awarded the scholarship to Suzanne Steffens in recognition of her impressive accomplishments in over a decade of service in the social sector. In particular, the award committee cited Ms. Steffens’ outstanding work at the American Heart Association, where she directed the association’s strategy on combating the obesity epidemic and helped to develop the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a collaborative initiative with the William J. Clinton Foundation to stop the increasing prevalence of childhood obesity in the United States by 2010. She managed several other key strategic relationships for the association, including a new partnership with the National Football League on a new social marketing campaign designed to encourage increased physical activity among children. Ms. Steffens also led efforts to build a successful, self-sustaining national state advocacy program. Her other social sector experience also includes program development and administration for Phoenix House, the nation’s largest substance abuse provider. Ms. Steffens is a graduate of the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science and the University of Texas.

Mrs. Steffens described her desire to pursue a Fuqua MBA:

“Today, nonprofits cannot just get by with ‘doing good’ anymore. A new paradigm has been created with a demand for accountability on both dollars spent and impact achieved. I want to become part of a new generation of social pioneers that will serve to bridge the gap between the nonprofit and for-profit worlds by working with nonprofits to view themselves more as social enterprises.

“There are many reasons why I choose Fuqua, but my main reason was the CASE program and the chance to work alongside J. Gregory Dees and the CASE staff. In order to become part of a new generation of social pioneers, I needed to arm myself with the tools, knowledge, and experience necessary to begin charting this new direction. I am confident that Fuqua and the CASE program will prepare me for this next phase in my career.”

Now in its second year, the CASE Social Sector Scholarship Program awards merit-based scholarships to first year students in the Fuqua Daytime MBA program who have nonprofit backgrounds and are committed to applying their business skills in the social sector. In total, scholarship recipients are eligible for $25,000 in financial support consisting of two years of tuition support at $10,000 per year and one summer internship support of up to $5,000.

CASE developed this scholarship program in response to the increasing demand for business skills in the social sector. The program has three principal goals—practical professional development for participants, more effective social sector organizations, enhanced activities at Fuqua and CASE. Through this program, CASE aims to have a significant and lasting impact on the students, the community, Fuqua, and the social sector of the future.

Fuqua on Board 2006-2007

The Fuqua on Board program matches Fuqua MBA students and alumni with Durham area nonprofits to serve as non-voting board members during the course of the academic year. Over the course of a seven-month apprenticeship, pairs of students work closely with a board mentor, participate regularly in board meetings and attend relevant committee meetings. Students serve as non-voting board associates, gaining valuable insight into the inner workings of nonprofit organizations while providing the nonprofits with fresh perspectives and critical business skills. This is a volunteer service learning program; students do not receive academic credit.

Information sessions will be held:

Tuesday, August 29, 12:15-1:00pm, Conference Rooms 11 & 12
Thursday, August 31, 7:15-7:45pm (after SIC Kickoff), RJ Reynolds Auditorium
Wednesday, September 6, 12:15-1:00pm, Conference Rooms 11 & 12

CASE Recommended Courses at Fuqua & Beyond

CASE has compiled a list of recommended electives for students considering careers in social entrepreneurship or active volunteer leadership in the social sector. View the list of recommended electives (word document).

Introducing the Social Impact Club

The Social Impact Club, Fuqua’s chapter of Net Impact, works closely with CASE to bring world class social sector speakers and events to Fuqua, provide opportunities for MBAs to engage with the Durham community, and develop the next generation of thoughtful CEOs and Executive Directors for the social sector and beyond. Read more about upcoming events and opportunities for leadership.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the Social Impact Club (SIC), it's Duke's student-led chapter of Net Impact. The SIC works closely with CASE on three fronts:

  • To bring world class social sector speakers and events to Fuqua
  • To provide a number of opportunities for MBAs to engage with the Durham community, while building their professional resume
  • To develop the next generation of thoughtful CEOs and Executive Directors for the social sector and beyond.

For our efforts during last years' campaign, we were voted Fuqua's “Club of the Year, 2006.” We're looking to the class of 2008 to help us build on that momentum and take even greater strides this year. To that end, we want to highlight a few opportunities you might want to start thinking about now:

THE NET IMPACT CONFERENCE
The Net Impact Conference is an annual gathering of students interested in using their business acumen to drive social or environmental benefit. Last year's conference at Stanford attracted more than 1,100 students from top schools, as well as the top recruiters in the sector. Al Gore was the keynote speaker. The conference sold out more than a month in advance!

If you have even the slightest inkling to work for a socially or environmentally responsible (for profit or nonprofit) firm, we'd encourage you to REGISTER NOW for this year's event at Kellogg. http://www.netimpact.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=853

You will receive a partial reimbursement from the club for the registration fee. We'll also arrange travel for participants, so no need to worry about plane tickets at the moment.

SIC KICKOFF MEETING
The kickoff meeting for new SIC club members is Thursday, August 31, 2006 at
6:15pm in RJR Auditorium. This meeting will give you a chance to:

  • Hear about the ways SIC can help you find the perfect job.
  • Learn more about leadership opportunities available first year students.
  • Participate in the most active and celebrated club on campus, and meet the second year students you'll be working with.

FIRST YEAR EXECUTIVE CABINET POSITIONS
While the SIC will provide a variety of ways to get involved as a first year student, we are offering two highly-competitive spots on the club's executive cabinet.

  • The MBAA Curriculum Change Chair will work with SY MBAA Sustainability
Chair Stephanie Nelson to introduce environmental operations, cause marketing, and corporate social responsibility into Duke's core classes. This individual will become a key driver of SIC's legacy within the school.
  • The Competition Preparation Chair will work with SY MBAA Academic Chair
Eric Gottfried to prepare Fuqua students for entry into the nation's leading MBA Case Competitions. This individual will build Duke's academic reputation among its peer institutions.

For additional information on either of these positions, please email Tim Scheu (tim.scheu@duke.edu) and Tom Mitchell (thomas.mitchell@duke.edu) with the name of the position in the subject line.

Give a Day Campaign Funds CASE Summer Internships

Thanks to the generous support of the Social Impact Club “Give a Day” Campaign and The Wachovia Foundation, CASE sponsored nine students’ summer internships with nonprofit organizations and public agencies during the summer of 2006.

Fuqua MBA students often seek a way to make the summer between their first and second years meaningful — a chance to apply business skills and gain valuable business experience and training in the social sector. The CASE Summer Internship Program enables Fuqua students to learn about the rewards and challenges of social sector management without making a significant financial sacrifice. In addition, the program enables organizations that otherwise could not afford to hire MBA student interns to benefit from students’ expertise in areas such as finance, management consulting, strategic planning and marketing.

This year’s CASE Summer Interns included:

The internship program provided these students with a combined total of $36,600 to match stipends provided by their summer employers.

CASE extends its appreciation to the Social Impact Club for its efforts in organizing this year's "Give a Day" fundraising campaign. As of the date of this publication, nearly $10,000 has been received or is in the process of being collected. The Social Impact Club raised these funds through individual donations, graduation rentals, and special events such as a chess tournament, trivia nights, and the annual 'Stache Bash. The SIC also collaborated with MBA Games and the Culinary Club to produce and sell a popular Fuqua cookbook.

A special thanks goes to Suneet Bhatt, Jenny Cermak, BJ Johar, Martha Jones, Rebecca Levin, Tom Mitchell, Will Richardson, Tim Scheu, and many others for their contributions toward a successful Give a Day fundraising campaign. Finally, we salute the many students, faculty and staff who supported this year's campaign

CASE also wishes to extend its appreciation to DeAnne Harrison and Nancy Kautzman of Fuqua's Development Office for their tireless efforts to collect and process the pledges.

The internship program is managed by the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship. The Social Impact Club spearheads student fundraising efforts and provides input on the strategic direction of the program.
