Beyond CASE: Social Enterprise 101 for Nonprofits Workshop & Networking Event

More Information: Participants will receive an overview of social enterprise as a potential alternative to traditional nonprofit fundraising strategies. Learn to identify and evaluate strengths through an organizational audit and how to translate these strengths into social enterprise opportunities. Participants will also engage in a process to evaluate the identified opportunities in an effort to determine which should be studied - in more detail through a feasibility assessment. As a special feature, case studies will be highlighted from organizations that chose to pursue social enterprise and the enterprises they operate, including a presentation by local social enterprise practitioners who will share experiences and insights. This Social Enterprise 101 workshop is in partnership with the Social Enterprise Network of the Triangle and the Duke Nonprofit Management Program. More Information: Come learn about how to get involved in the Fuqua on Board program, which matches Duke MBA students with Durham area nonprofits to serve as non-voting board members during the academic year. Over the course of a seven-month apprenticeship, pairs of student volunteers work closely with a board mentor, participate regularly in board meetings and attend relevant committee meetings. Students serve as "board associates," gaining valuable insight into the governance and inner workings of nonprofit organizations while providing the nonprofits with fresh perspectives and critical business skills. The CMC and CASE have arranged for CSR recruiter and career coach Ellen Weinreb to lead a workshop in which she will define Mission Driven Jobs, differentiate how this type of job search is different from a traditional search, and provide tips on the job search. She will also go over her in depth research looking at CSR jobs and the state of the field. The presentation will identify a few hot jobs on the market right now as well as resources for following up on your own job search. A Q&A session will follow the workshop and give you an opportunity to apply Ellen's expertise to your own career questions.

More Information: Come hear executives from Better World Books tell the story of this impressive social enterprise and the challenges and opportunities of operating a sustainable venture. Learn from the CEO, David Murphy, CFO, Paul Sansone (Fuqua ’92), and co-founder, Xavier Helgesen about how Better World Books has grown from a small on-campus startup venture to an organization that has raised over $6.5 million to promote literacy since 2002. Better World Books, “the online bookstore with a soul,” collects and sells books online to fund literacy initiatives worldwide. It was founded in 2002 by three friends from the University of Notre Dame who started selling textbooks online to earn some money, and ended up forming a pioneering social enterprise — a business with a mission to promote literacy. Education Pioneers is a ten-week summer fellowship where talented graduate students intern with effective schools, districts, and education organizations and train under existing education leaders. WISER is dedicated to fostering a spirit of intellectual enthusiasm that will challenge girls to lead, serve, and ultimately reduce the gender equality gap in Kenyan society (more at http://wisergirls.org/). WISER operates as an independent Kenyan NGO, but remains closely tied to Duke University. Duke is supporting the development of the project and Duke students have been involved in the growth of WISER since its conception. We will pay particular attention to what is different about conducting an "off-campus" search. This session will build on the earlier presentation (Introduction to Social Sector Careers) and will focus on how to conduct informational interviews, write cover letter, and develop a resume tailored to the social sector. We will also discuss other job search tactics. The workshop will be led by CASE Managing Director, Matt Nash. About the Gurus:
Paul Light has authored 18 books and is the Goddard Professor of Public Service and founding principal investigator of the Organizational Performance Initiative. Prior to joining NYU, Paul served in positions at the Brookings Institution, Pew Charitable Trusts, and the University of Minnesota's Hubert Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. Greg Dees is the founder of CASE and has been dubbed “the Father of Social Entrepreneurship” for his work in developing the academic field of social entrepreneurship. Prior to joining the faculty at Duke, Greg worked at McKinsey & Company, taught at the Yale School of Management, at Harvard Business School, where he helped launch the Initiative on Social Enterprise, and also at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, where he co-founded the Center for Social Innovation.

About the Speaker: Stanley S. Litow is IBM's Vice President of Corporate Citizenship & Corporate Affairs and President of IBM's Foundation. He heads global corporate citizenship and corporate social responsibility at IBM. Under his leadership, IBM has been widely regarded as a global leader in Corporate Social Responsibility and prized for its societal and environmental leadership, its labor practices and civic leadership. Under Stan, IBM has developed innovative voice recognition technology to help non-literate children and adults learn to read, automatic language translation and bilingual email, open source technology to help people with disabilities access the web, a humanitarian grid to power research on Cancer and AIDS and new digital imaging technology to improve water quality. He helped devise IBM's Global Citizen's Portfolio consisting of matching accounts for learning and The Corporate Service Corps a corporate version of the Peace Corps that trains thousands of IBM's future leaders. IBM's efforts in education have raised student achievement and won the company two Ron Brown Awards presented by the President.
