: Many nonprofits are increasingly looking to the knowledge and tools of business to enhance their performance. At the same time, many individuals with business experience are seeking to use their skills to have greater impact when they engage with nonprofits. There are many potential benefits of this cross-fertilization. However, meaningful differences still exist between the business and social sectors, most critically around issues related to mission, culture and norms, legal structures, measurement of success, and economics. These differences preclude the wholesale transfer of business methods and cultures into social-purpose organizations. Thus, both business and nonprofit leaders must recognize the distinct character of nonprofit organizations and thoughtfully adapt business appraoches for success in a different operating environment. In this practical session, CASE Faculty Director Greg Dees will explore with participants some of the benefits, but also the challenges and risks, of bringing business skills into the nonprofit sector.
