Each year CASE recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of social entrepreneurship, bringing social entrepreneurship leaders from around the world to Fuqua each spring.

More Information: Join Dina Powell, president of the Goldman Sachs Foundation and global head of Corporate Engagement for Goldman Sachs for a small group discussion about social impact initiatives at Goldman. The Goldman Sachs Foundation seeks to foster economic growth and opportunity globally. The Foundation supports strategic programs that include 10,000 Women, a five-year initiative to offer a business and management education to women entrepreneurs around the world and 10,000 Small Businesses, an effort providing underserved small business owners in the United States with access to capital, business education, and mentors and networks. In addition, Dina serves as president of Goldman Sachs Gives, a firm-donor advised fund focused on creating jobs and economic growth, building and stabilizing communities, honoring service and veterans, and increasing educational opportunities.
Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Dina served as Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs and as Deputy Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. Many leaders have risen to the challenge in the past few years, including the founders of Teach for America, TOMS Shoes, KIPP, and Kiva. Could you be the next great social entrepreneur? Dan Heath, a CASE Senior Fellow and the co-author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers Made to Stick and Switch, will explain why you should consider it. We will also describe how we (at CASE) can help you through all the resources available to students aspiring to launch a social venture while at Duke. This workshop is open to all Duke students, though it is aimed primarily at graduate and professional students.

The 2011 Award will be presented to Jim Fruchterman, CEO of Benetech. Benetech emerged out of Fruchterman’s pioneering work for Arkenstone, the world leader in reading machines for the blind. Seeing the value in providing affordable tools that greatly empowered the reading disabled, Jim Fruchterman was inspired to start a business that utilized technology to serve social causes. Are you interested in a career in consulting? Do you want to use your consulting skills to create social impact? Come learn about what a careers in social impact consulting and nonprofit consulting really like. Find out if social impact consulting is for you…and how you can get into the field.
This workshop will be led by CASE Scholar alumna and social sector consultant, Suzanne Smith (Fuqua ’08). Suzanne has deep experience in the social sector: she has worked as an internal consultant for the American Heart Association and as a consultant with Community Wealth Ventures. Suzanne then went on to start her own consulting firm, Social Impact Architects, specializing in strategic and business planning, organizational assessment and improvement, marketing, and public affairs to assist social enterprises and social sector organizations across the country achieve breakthrough results. Suzanne is a member of the prestigious Society of Organizational Learning (founded by Peter Senge), serves on the National Board of the Social Enterprise Alliance, and is the 2010 recipient of the Next Generation Social Entrepreneurs Award. We encourage all Fuqua students interested in consulting to attend this workshop.

Ron Cordes, co-Chairman of Genworth Financial Wealth Management and founder of ImpactAssets, has been influencing and both traditional and impact investing fields for over 30 years…first building the private wealth management market and now shifting his expertise to impact investing!
CASE is excited to host Ron D. Cordes as a part of the CASE i3: Initiative on Impact Investing Speakers Series.
This is a great opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and local community members to hear from Cordes, learn how he is driving the creation of new financial products to drive the growth of the new impact investing industry, and how his work relates to the growth of social entrepreneurship globally. In a recent Fast Company article, Cordes commented "I spent the first half of my life building businesses designed to be the best in the world, for the second half, I really want to support businesses that are the best for the world." About the Speaker: Cordes started his career as a co-founder of AssetMark Investment Services, which he sold to Genworth Financial in 2006. Since the sale of his company, he has served on the board of Genworth Financial Wealth Management, a firm with $25 billion assets under management, and is currently the co-chairman of that board. He is also the board of ImpactAssets, a nonprofit financial services company created to help solve the world’s problems by catalyzing investment capital for environmental, social, and financial impact.
Cordes speaks and writes extensively on the field of impact investing, including authoring a series of articles for Financial Planning magazine and presenting at Social Capital Markets (SOCAP), Clinton Global Initiative, TakeAction! and the Global Philanthropy Forum. He is also the co-author of "The Art of Investing & Portfolio Management," published in 2004 by McGraw Hill, and was recognized as an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2005
