Each year CASE recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of social entrepreneurship, bringing social entrepreneurship leaders from around the world to Fuqua each spring.

More Information: Come learn about how to get involved in the Fuqua on Board program, which matches Duke MBA students with Durham area nonprofits to serve as non-voting board members during the academic year. Over the course of a seven-month apprenticeship, pairs of student volunteers work closely with a board mentor, participate regularly in board meetings and attend relevant committee meetings. Students serve as "board associates," gaining valuable insight into the governance and inner workings of nonprofit organizations while providing the nonprofits with fresh perspectives and critical business skills. World Learning: Careers in International Development

More Information: A part of the Duke Entrepreneurship Education Series (DEES), this session focus on how social entrepreneurs can successfully finance their social ventures. The session will be led by Rick Larson, Director of Sustainable Ventures at The Conservation Fund, a national land and water conservation organization with a dual mission of environmental protection and economic development. Before joining the Conservation Fund, Rick previously served as Managing Director for SJF Ventures, a $45 M venture capital fund focused on the clean technology and business services sectors. He has also worked with REAL Enterprises, where he was National Director of a nationwide entrepreneurship education program. Rick earned his MBA from the Yale School of Management.

The Broad Residency in Urban Education, a nationwide leadership development program, immediately places participants in full-time managerial positions in urban school systems while providing professional development and networking opportunities. Broad Residents are not required to have experience in the education industry and receive starting salaries of $85-$95K. Education Pioneers is a ten-week summer fellowship where talented graduate students intern with effective schools, districts, and education organizations and train under existing education leaders. Education Pioneers has a strong portfolio of Partner organizations in the Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, D.C. The clients do need access to financial services (lending, savings, and insurance) but they also need additional training, guidance, and support that can most effectively be delivered by the microfinance institutions. Based on the development of training, extensive research and practical experience in many countries in Central America and Africa, this discussion will focus on how being client focused can improve the social and financial impacts on the clients and also improve the financial success of the microfinance institution. The Lilly MDR-TB Partnership exists to save lives by preventing and treating multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) - a terrible disease that afflicts millions of people in some of the poorest regions of the world. Maya Ajmera is the founder and president of The Global Fund for Children. More Information: Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus will speak at the Durham campus of North Carolina Central university on Thursday, February 5th at 2p.m. in the B.N. Duke Auditorium (map). Yunus will take part in a panel discussion which will be moderated by Bijoy Sahoo, dean of the School of Business. Following the panel discussion, and will sign copies of his most recent book, Creating a World Without Poverty. The event is free and open to the public, however, tickets are required for entry. Duke students, staff, and faculty may pick up tickets from the CASE office at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business during regular business hours.
Muhammad Yunus established the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh in 1983, fueled by the belief that credit is a fundamental human right. His objective was to help poor people escape from poverty by providing loans on terms suitable to them and by teaching them a few sound financial principles so they could help themselves. From Dr. Yunus' personal loan of small amounts of money to destitute basket weavers in Bangladesh in the mid-1970s, the Grameen Bank has advanced to the forefront of a burgeoning world movement toward eradicating poverty through microlending. Replicas of the Grameen Bank model now operate in more than 100 countries worldwide. In 2006, Yunus and the bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, "for their efforts to create economic and social development.”

More Information: Mr. Tierney is a recognized leader in the nonprofit sector. In 1999 he launched The Bridgespan Group, an independent, nonprofit affiliate of Bain & Company designed to provide general management consulting services to foundations and nonprofit organizations. During 2000, Mr. Tierney stepped down as Bain & Company's chief executive to concentrate on Bridgespan related activities. Recently, he led the development of Bridgestar, a new nonprofit initiative dedicated to enhancing leadership within the nonprofit sector. Mr. Tierney serves on the boards of eBay, Inc., The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, The Hoover Institution, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Harvard Business School, The Harvard Business School Initiative on Social Enterprise and The National Academies. Mr. Tierney lectures at Harvard Business School and has contributed to numerous case studies and publications, including The Harvard Business Review. More Information: Bob Massie has been working on business, finance, governance, sustainability, and social entrepreneurship for more than thirty years. Bob Massie worked as the Executive Director of CERES. While at CERES, he proposed the creation of generally accepted guidelines for corporate sustainability performance, and from 1998 to 2005 was the co-founder and first chair of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The GRI is now an independent international standard setting body whose disclosure guidelines are used by more than 1,200 multinational corporations. was the founder of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). He has taught at Harvard Divinity School and was a Fulbright Scholar in South Africa, during which time he wrote an award winning book titled "Loosing the Bonds: The United States and South Africa in the Apartheid Years." Dr. Massie has a master's from Yale Divinity School and a PhD from the Harvard Business School.

This spring, CASE will present its 2009 Leadership Award to Jacqueline Novogratz, Founder and CEO of the Acumen Fund and author of The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap Between Rich and Poor in an Interconnected World (releasing March 2009). Acumen Fund is a non-profit global venture fund using entrepreneurial approaches to solve the problems of global poverty. They seek to prove that small amounts of philanthropic capital, combined with large doses of business acumen, can build thriving enterprises that serve vast numbers of the poor.
