Jacqueline Novogratz Awarded Annual 2009 Leadership in Social Entrepreneurship Award
DURHAM, N.C. – The Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE) at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business presened the 2009 Leadership in Social Entrepreneurship award on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. in Geneen Auditorium. Jacqueline Novogratz, Founder and CEO of the Acumen Fund and author of The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap Between Rich and Poor in an Interconnected World, accepted the award and presented a public lecture as part of Fuqua’s Distinguished Speaker Series.
Novogratz started writing The Blue Sweater in 1996 after the Rwandan genocide. The colorful, funny and painful stories mark her personal journey from arriving in Africa in 1986 and continue through the founding of Acumen Fund. The Acumen Fund is a non-profit global venture fund that uses entrepreneurial approaches to solve the problems of global poverty. They seek to prove that small amounts of philanthropic capital, combined with large doses of business acumen, can build thriving enterprises that serve vast numbers of the poor. Acumen’s investments focus on delivering affordable, critical goods and services – like health, water, housing and energy – through innovative, market-oriented approaches. Prior to founding the Acumen Fund, Novogratz founded and directed The Philanthropy Workshop and The Next Generation Leadership program at the Rockefeller Foundation.
The Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship founded the Leadership in Social Entrepreneurship Award to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of social entrepreneurship. Honorees may be social entrepreneurs, philanthropists, researchers, writers, or academics whose work has had positive social impact by encouraging or demonstrating innovation and promoting effectiveness within the social sector.
