Teaching

In recent years, faculty members around the world have begun teaching a wide range of courses related to social entrepreneurship at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Many are broad introductions to the field, including our primary elective course here at CASE. Others focus on specific fields, such as ecotourism, health care, or education, or on discrete functional areas, such as finance or marketing. While the themes and approaches vary, most of them strive to incorporate a balance of theory and practice, relying heavily on case studies and, when possible, interactions with leaders from the field. CASE has compiled a selection of course descriptions and syllabi that are available online to serve as a resource for faculty interested in developing a course on social entrepreneurship. This list is by no means comprehensive, nor is it meant to be. Moreover, inclusion is not an endorsement of a particular course, program, or school. We merely hope to provide a variety of course examples for faculty members considering teaching social entrepreneurship. If you have recommendations for additions to this compilation, please contact CASE.

In addition to teaching courses focused primarily on social entrepreneurship, some business school faculty are interested in incorporating social enterprise themes into existing courses on strategy, marketing, operations, accounting, or any other business discipline. CasePlace.org is an excellent, free resource for cases, references, and materials related to social impact management and social entrepreneurship. Faculty may also want to explore the Social Enterprise and Ethics section of Harvard Business Online.

Finally, many faculty also engage in teaching executive education for social entrepreneurs and social sector leaders. More information on these types of courses can be found in the social sector leaders’ resource section.
