Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
GCP OVERVIEW
What countries will the GCP be going to in 2010-2011?
The 2010-2011 countries will be determined in Summer 2010. They will likely include Hyderabad, India; Johannesburg, South Africa and potentially Managua, Nicaragua. Check back in to the website or attend information sessions in the Fall to learn more!
How can I find out more?
In Fall 2010, there will be several opportunities to find out more information. These will include the “Global Opportunities Fair” hosted by the International Center; information sessions hosted by CASE and information distributed to the Net Impact Club listserve. You can also email gcp@fuqua.duke.edu with specific questions (AFTER reviewing this website for answers!)
GCP APPLICATION PROCESS
Is the GCP competitive?
Yes. There is an application process and typically more demand than space available in the class.
How does the application process work?
GCP Registration is a two-part process – online and in person. An online registration survey will be distributed after the information sessions in the Fall. Students must complete the online application in full – including questions about previous experience, interests and preferences for their GCP match (country, project, etc). In addition to the online form, students must submit the following in hard copy: application fee (payable to "Duke University", check or money order); copy of student passport; copy of current resume. The GCP application is ONLY considered complete when all parts of the application are submitted by the deadline provided.
How are teams assigned?
Student teams are formed based on students’ background, experience and interests. CASE does our best to create diverse and balanced teams that have the skillsets to best support each client’s needs.
Will I get my choice of country? Client? Project?
In assigning teams, student preferences for location, client, type of industry, etc., will be honored as much as possible. However, in order to provide the highest quality team possible to each and every client, compromises must be made. Thus, students should not expect to get their first preference in all categories.
Can I select my teammates?
No.
COSTS AND COURSE LOGISTICS
Is there an application fee?
Yes. Students are responsible for paying an application fee of $325.
Besides the application fee, do I have to pay to participate?
Yes, students are responsible for covering the costs of their GCP trip. In 2009-2010, the trip costs ranged from $2,800 US to $4,000 US (depending on country). Trip costs will be announced during the Fall information sessions. Students are given the opportunity to apply for additional financial aid (student loans) but repayment is entirely the responsibility of the student.
Are there other costs to participate?
Yes. Each student is responsible for paying for visas and immunizations (if needed for your country of travel). You are also responsible for in-country expenses, including, but not limited to: food (some meals are considered “group meals” and are included in the trip cost, but most meals and incidentals are at the student’s cost). Also, laundry, personal Internet and phone call usage, travel insurance, and any other incidentals are the responsibility of the student.
Do I receive credit for participating?
Yes. Each student that completes ALL requirements of the GCP will be awarded 6 credits.
What is the timeline for the course?
See “How it Works” for a sample course timeline.
So, the GCP trip takes place over Spring Break, can I do any other traveling during Spring Break?
No. Due to Fuqua policies and the timing of classes in Spring 1 and Spring 2, there is no flexibility on travel schedules. Each GCP student is required to take the exact outgoing and return flight as the rest of the group.
